Calm and Collected

Once the holidays are over and the decorations are put away for another year, I enjoy casting an eye over areas of my home, taking in all the pretty things. One favourite corner of my home is our cottage landing. It is decidedly diminutive and I like to make the most of the character and display some of my much-loved pieces.
The old timbers in the wall show the original height of the eaves (the cottage was originally thatched but a fire in 1906 stripped the thatch away and the level of the roof was then raised and recovered with tiles.) The exposed timbers span the width of the main bedroom - very nice to look at but the wall also slopes away dramatically so we aren't able to stand any tall furniture against it!
I have many collections; well, there are so many lovely things to collect aren't there?! Here are a few of my old talc tins.

The Goya and carnations talc are both English examples and the red rose talc is an American one. One of my pretty tins is shown, propping up some vintage books. I also collect religious prints and this delightful chipped pink framed example is one of my most treasured. The old hobnail milk glass lamp is American and the runner is a rescued piece of eiderdown fabric.

Roses paintings can be found everywhere in our cottage; propped on shelves, hanging on walls and even here, where I have placed two Victorian roses paintings behind the leaded glass of the doors.

The cupboard is very old and I am reticent to paint it - but who knows, I may do one day!

The light streams in from the bedroom window highlighting the cupboard. The floral curtain softens the corner of the staircase and the handmade rug is soft and comfy to stand on, making this a very relaxing space.

Do you have a favourite corner of your home?

  1. What a delightful corner! My hallway has shoes, abandoned bags and muddy footprints! Sons just don't "get it" - the need for charm, light and tranquility.

  2. Your favourite corner is gorgeous. I can't say that I have a favourite corner in my home - it all needs decorating and sorting out and also has a teenage son and friends rampaging through it most of the time. Nevermind, I can look at your lovely cottage and dream of loveliness.

  3. Hello Clare,
Happy New Year. I loved looking at you landing, it's lovely and I am very much hankering over some of those vintage talc tins. M fave corner has to be my "den", I love being in there surrounded by all my goodies and am loathe to leave it when my other half comes home each evening!

  4. Hi Clare, that whole corner is scrummy, I want it all!!!! Seeing a proper cottage always makes me wish we lived in one! I just love the rescued eiderdown runner and the pink framed picture the best. My favourite little nook of my house is my little shelf in the living room. Nothing too fancy but all mine and completely how I like it :)

  8. I do as well, although it's not much of a corner. Along a wall I have an antique secretary desk, with it's pull down flap to reveal the pigeon holes inside. It's white, and crackled, and I have all manner of vintage nicknacks about it. I love it.

  10. Hi Clare
Happy New Year to you. I had that exact same cupboard inherited from my grandmother. Many years ago I took off the doors and painted and distressed it as it had shelves inside which then gave me more surfaces to display things on!

  11. Hi Clare,

What a charming spot. I don't really have a favourite corner, though I do enjoy the space where my chiming clock sits alongside family photographs.

    Happy New Year!

  13. Hiya,

I would be hesitant to paint that cabinet too. I think it's all well and good painting things, but it's very hard to go back. I love the cabinet as it is. The whle corner is gorgeous!

  20. First, congrats on getting your Holiday decorations away, ours are mostly down but some are still not in storage. Second, the old timbers in the walls add some great character. In terms of a favorite corner in our home, I am not sure. We had some built-ins recently added that I like very much ...

  25. Clare, I am in love with your home. Those talc tins bring back so many memories from my childhood, and the rose prints and table runner, a treasure of keepsakes. I love diffent parts of my home at different times. Currently it is the work space (it recently got a spring clean). hugs Margie.
