Lots and Lots of Loveliness at Vintage Home!

It has been a really busy time here just lately. What with our village's Jubilee celebrations, (which were pretty impressive, I must say!) working on the house and - thanks to the rain - trying to tame the exuberant growth in the garden, we have certainly had our hands full. Of course, we have found time to seek out some gorgeous vintage stock and have recently added a vast array of textiles, homewares and quilts to the Vintage Home shop. Here are a few of the lovely things we hope to tempt you with! The first three images are of a large and stunning hand embroidery, dating to the 1930s. The vast array of detail and rich colours have fair taken our breath away! Peacocks, a pond, roses, poppies, hollyhocks, butterflies, a cottage, blossom trees... ...make this a truly exceptional and unique piece of work. There's also a plump, beauty of an eiderdown... ...and this rare lucite tissue box cover will add a touch of glamour to your dressing table! It's time for romance with this beautiful bedside clock decorated with cherubs and roses. A rosy rug is the perfect accessory for your bedroom... ...and an antique quilt smothered with petite rosebuds is the ultimate in comfort and prettiness! A pink paisley quilt adds a splash of colour to the bedroom... ...and these pretty eiderdown fabric cushions will add a touch of cottage garden delight to your home. All these and many more vintage treasures are waiting for you in the Vintage Home shop; we hope you enjoy your visit!

The Perfect Vintage Study

If you have a passion for vintage and antique furniture then you will love this stunning handpainted bureau and drawers.
It is one of our latest finds for the website and we are thrilled to showcase it here on the Vintage Home blog. It's a lovely large piece of furniture and truly beautiful; just perfect for your vintage study where you can surround yourself with everything you need to write letters, catch up on your reading or make a telephone call.
With its many nooks and large writing surface it's an invaluable item and will be the focal point of the room.
This exquisite Victorian case has taken our breath away. It would prove very useful in a study, perhaps to hold stationery.
It really is the most beautiful example of a handpainted silk case we have ever seen and complements the fine painted flowers on the bureau.
Finally, no study should be without a waste bin but this doesn't necessarily have to be something you hide away - so of course it simply had to be a pretty painted floral one, didn't it?
We hope you enjoy browsing the website and keep a lookout for our next update in a few days time...in the meantime, it looks like Dennis's curiosity has got the better of him...
...so we'd better go and tidy up that desk!

Hooray for Spring!

How wonderful that Spring is here. We are cheered to see the dancing daffodils and the pretty blossom bringing colour into our garden again. This is the time of year to sweep away the Winter blues and bring a refreshing array of colour and prettiness into our homes. Floral paintings are perfect for bringing the outdoors in; we fill our own walls with paintings and prints, they create a captivating display. We have some beautiful paintings for you in our Picture Gallery, shown below are just a few of the fabulous floral paintings and prints to be found there. The official arrival of Spring coincides with us venturing off on some serious buying trips for the website - so please check back regularly to see all the superb vintage we will be adding to the website shortly.

Now, no need for words, just enjoy!

By the way, the beautiful image of the ladies dancing amidst blossom is taken from a rare and stunning 1920s fabric which we hold in our collection. It is immaculate and unused so the colours are incredibly pretty - amazing to think it is 90 years old; isn't it delightful?

Restoration of our Vintage Home

We have been restoring our 17th century home in Herefordshire for over a year now. It is incredibly hard work and, whenever we are flagging or feel that we haven't achieved as much as we would have liked, we delve into our comprehensive archive of photos which chart our progress. The house was in such a neglected state and required so much work that we can hardly believe how it is beginning to come together with its wealth of timbers and original features. Although we are far from finished, we have completed a few rooms and are very proud of our characterful dining room; these photos show the amazing transformation.

As the photos below will show, when we viewed the house, the room which we thought was most suited to become the dining room was not conducive to cosy dining! The walls and ceiling were covered with boarding and a peeling layer of gloss paint did nothing to enhance the appearance. The floor was covered with a curled vinyl flooring and the 1950s tiled fireplace was cracked and broken. The doors, and any timbers which weren't covered up, were painted black and the Victorian casement window had not seen a lick of paint for many years. So it was decided that this room would be restored to become the heart of the house. The false ceiling was removed, the old fireplace was knocked out and latter day plaster was removed. All of this revealed a wealth of timbers and original wattle and daub panels. We even discovered a handwritten letter from 1769 hidden in one of the old peg holes and will one day have this framed to hang in the room. Although the room was rather uninviting before we started the work, it was quite scary to see it during its 'in between stage'. But, as the saying goes, you can't make an omelette without cracking an egg, so we 'kept the faith' and ploughed on with the arduous task. Eventually, it all came together and the room is now finished. Of course, we will continue to change the decor - and as I am sure you can imagine, in true vintage style, I have changed the textiles and pictures several times since these photos were taken!

So, here are the Before, In-Between and After photos!

As it looked when we bought the house - the fireplace was removed and our re-conditioned Rayburn now stands in its place (how we ever lived without a Rayburn before, I do not know!)

A room with a view?

Mmm, well the view has improved now those curtains have gone - but there's no going back at this stage!

A vast improvement without the fireplace, but there's still a long way to go until it has that 'homely' appeal!

Who would have thought I would soon be relaxing on the chaise longue in front of this wall...

...aah, now that's better!

Since completing the dining room, we have almost finished the bathroom and then we will turn our attention to the kitchen - oh, and then there's the huge, overgrown garden! See you all again soon...
